[1891] [8/24]: “A Human Monstrosity” [OH]

A Human Monstrosity

Loose in Ohio Killing Stock and Scaring People – What Is It?

A gentlemen who came over from Ohio yesterday to attend the camp meeting at Moundsville gave an Intelligencer reporter an account of a strange wild animal that is roaming around among the Ohio hills, about three miles from this city. He says the neighborhood over there is greatly excited about the matter.

The animal is in appearance like a man covered with hair or coarse wool, and appears to walk equally well on two or four feet. It has twice been seen, but no one has been able to get very near it. The gentleman who gave this information is thoroughly reliable and says that the terror attacked and killed a hog belonging to Robt. Hutchinson, literally tearing it to pieces.

The farmers in that vicinity are afraid to go into their fields to work or bring in their stock. If it were not for the character of the informant the whole matter would be set down as a product of the Buckeye imagination, aided by whisky, from which the reptiles had not been sifted.

The inhabitants are going to organize an armed force and go in search of the “thing,” so that more of the matter may be expected in a day or two.
